Food: Proper hot chocolate

Hot chocolate is a bit of a comfort food for me. When I was little my mum used to make it for me by melting pieces of chocolate in milk. It always had to be served in this little melamine cup I had with faded rabbits on it - even when I was 12 (or maybe older).

It's been chilly here of late - not properly cold like it should be - but cold enough that after spending the morning stood in a cold, wet park you need a warm drink.

Instant hot chocolate is all well and good, and you can buy some decent ones, but they're not as good as this. This is proper hot chocolate, thick and creamy and not at all diet friendly. But it's an every-now-and-again treat. This recipe is adapted from one by Jamie Oliver.

To make it you will need:

2 tablespoons Horlicks 2 tablespoons cornflour 3 tablespoons icing sugar 4 tablespoons organic cocoa 100g good quality chocolate (I used milk choc but you can use dark for a more grown up drink), finely grated 1 pinch ground cinnamon 1 pinch sea salt

Serves 10

Method:

Mix all the ingredients together and put in an air tight jar - simple. To make a cup, fill your mug with milk and then pour it into a pan and bring it almost to the boil. Spoon in 4-5 tablespoons of the mix into the milk and give it a whisk. Leave it to bubble for a few minutes until it's nice and thick and creamy. Pour into your mug and top with a marshmallow or two.
